Operators based in South Yorkshire and those who regularly visit the region are being encouraged to sign up to the ECO (Efficient and Cleaner Operators) Stars Fleet Recognition Scheme.
The programme is being put together by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council (BMBC), Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Sheffield City Council and Travel South Yorkshire.
Hauliers can register at the Care4Air website from the middle of October and their environmental efforts - including driver training, use of fuel management systems and the age of their fleet - will be taken into consideration to achieve a rating of up to five stars.
BMBC principal transportation officer Alan West says the councils also want to help operators be green and discuss issues they may have with congestion and delivery slots in town centres.
