Inverurie, Aberdeenshire-based distribution group Scotch Premier Meat has purchased a second Mercedes tractor unit, but admits there are no plans to replace the existing, largely Daf, fleet. The group received the Mercedes-Benz Actros 2458 this month, in addition to a Daf CF85, raising the total fleet size to 16.
The Actros is equipped with Mercedes PowerShift 12-speed automated transmission and a flat-floored MegaSpace cab. Scotch Premier Meat, a subsidiary company of ANM Group, will use the truck to supply a range of wholesalers and high-street butchers throughout the UK.
While the acquisition price was not disclosed, transport manager Charlie Thomson cites "a good deal" as one reason behind the purchase." The firm approached Aberdeen's Mercedes dealer John R Weir (Truck & Van) after deciding Daf's 18-month lead time was too long.
Although the Dafs and Mercedes have similar fuel efficiency levels, Thomson stresses that as the older lorries are gradually replaced for newer models, Mercedes will not be prioritised. Scotch Premier Meat typically replaces its Dafs after three to four years and has had a 34-year relationship with the marque.
Thomson comments on the new Mercedes truck: "We'll be monitoring its performance closely, but the early signs look very promising. We'll see how this one goes."
