TruckNet UK asks: do you drive for love or money?

18 September 2008

Driving for love or money? That's the theme of an interesting discussion currently taking place on the TruckNet UK forums. In these uncertain economic times, it seems many drivers still choose their employer on the type of work it does and the trucks it runs rather than the amount in their wage packet at the end of the week.

Others are only in it for the money and job satisfaction is well down their list.  As one driver puts it: "Being realistic, I'm in my 30s, have a mortgage, live on my own, pay child support plus every other bill I get hit with.

"Maybe if I was younger and had less commitments, or was older and had paid everything off, things would be different - but they aren't. Plus I also like having money to go visit friends in America, have a nice motorbike, go out clubbing at least once a week.

"Saying that I'm picky about jobs, I mostly do trunking or tramping work, night shifts Sunday nights till Friday mornings. The trunking is boring as hell if you have a passion for driving trucks it will soon kill it. There are some companies and some runs I won't do because I find them unbearable.

"If it came down to a choice between two different companies - one with crappy motors and boring runs but lots of money, and one with top-of-the-range motors and interesting runs but crap money - I would pick the one with lots of money. Don't get me wrong, I do have a  passion for trucks but I have bigger passion for other things outside work which money allows me to do. "

The opposing view is nicely presented by this post:

"I have in the past taken a job for a bit less than another because I wanted to do the job I love driving and would drop a few quid to be happy. I prefer small companies where they know your name. They may not pay as much as Stobart etc, but each to their own."
