Glasgow rail freight terminal plans considered

23 September 2008

Plans to build a huge rail freight terminal between Cumbernauld and Glasgow, creating 1,000 jobs and removing hundreds of HGVs from the roads, is to be considered by councillors shortly. Agents acting on behalf of Kilgarth Development Company (KDC) say the proposal includes building eight units of up to 350,000ft2 on 91 hectares of land near the M73. The development will also create a direct link to the motorway, removing "significant numbers" of lorries from the road network.

According  to environmental consultants at Ironside Farrar, KDC has "identified the strategic requirement for rail freight facilities within the Glasgow metropolitan area to meet increasing rail freight needs".

But local news sources say the plans have attracted opposition from local residents who are objecting to noise and pollution, despite a report claiming the site is "substantially severed from communities by both the rail system and landfill activity". A spokeswoman for local MP Tom Clarke, who represents the constituency of Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill, says he is unable to comment on planning matters.
