The police are running a roadside operation as part of a crackdown to prevent lorries ignoring weight and width restrictions on Kent's rural roads. Kent Police is carrying out road checks around Maidstone on 24 and 25 September as it aims to prevent drivers from flouting weight rules and causing congestion in the area.
The bridges over the River Medway at Teston and East Farleigh will be targets. Police Constable Stuart Russell-Thomas claims these bridges may collapse if HGV drivers continue to break the rules, while local residents have also complained of unnecessary noise. Officers will also target the B2163 between Leeds and Langley, and the B2015 between Hampsted Lane and Wateringbury crossroads.
