Liverpool launches TruckWatch scheme

02 October 2008

Liverpool has set up a TruckWatch scheme to in an effort to cut freight crime. The scheme will target truck hijackings, which police believe may have become more frequent in Merseyside because police protection has made cash vans and banks riskier targets.

The business crime team from Liverpool Chamber of Commerce will run the scheme in conjunction with TruckPol, the police's  specialist freight crime unit, and the Merseyside, Lancashire and Greater Manchester police forces.

Peter Jones, manager of the chamber's crime team, says: "Nationally, around 3,000 HGVs go missing every year and Liverpool is one of the worst areas, along with the South-East. The Road Haulage Association also says violent crime against drivers is on the increase, so it is important that we do something about it."

The Liverpool scheme will be launched today (30 September) at an event at Haydock Park racecourse, which will be hosted by Liverpool MP and chair of the Government's transport select committee, Louise Ellman.
