Lib Dems propose less fuel in Channel Tunnel

02 October 2008

The Liberal Democrats are pushing for the amount of fuel lorries can store in their tanks when using the Channel Tunnel to be slashed by 80% to reduce fire risk.

Following the third Channel Tunnel fire in 12 years, Lib Dem shadow transport secretary Norman Baker has insisted that the Channel Tunnel Safety Authority review safety measures for trucks. "Urgent action  must be taken to reduce the risk of any further accidents," he says.

Baker proposes that HGVs using the tunnel must cut the amount of diesel carried in their fuel tanks from 1,500 litres to 300 litres.
