Viridor buys second Canter

08 October 2008

Leading waste management company Viridor has increased its hazardous waste capacity after taking on a new Mitsubishi Fuso Canter at its Taunton, Somerset, site. The Canter 7C18D comes with a crewcab and a 180hp 5-litre engine and will remove hazardous waste - including oil, solvent and paint - from local authority and commercial sites across the South-West. It joins a 6.3-tonne Canter that the firm has operated for the past seven years.

The body, built by Trans Load, of Andover, is designed  to be liquid-tight and is equipped with a gas-extraction unit, secure stowage and a tail-lift.

Steve Yerbury, technical waste manager for Viridor Waste Management (Somerset), says: "We specified the truck locally, taking the opportunity to make a few improvements on our previous vehicle. We've gone for the 7.5-tonner this time because we wanted the extra carrying capacity, as the amount of waste being generated by councils and businesses is increasing all of the time."

Despite its crewcab and body, the new truck retains a payload of 2,400kg, allowing it to carry up to a dozen 250-litre drums.

Typically, the vehicle is manned by a driver and a chemist, but the vehicle's crewcab means larger teams can be deployed when necessary. "We dispose of anything from oil, petrol, paints, solvents, cleaners, pesticides and lab chemicals," adds Yerbury.  "Our last Canter has covered 400,000km in its seven years [of operation] it has proved extremely reliable, so much  so that it's still in service, which explains why we've opted for the same manufacturer's chassis again."
