Ford announces series of Transit van updates

16 October 2008

Ford has announced a host of updates to its Transit van, including the UK launch of the long awaited all-wheel-drive (AWD) version. This is joined by a new 114hp 2.2 TDCi engine complete with six-speed manual, which replaces the 2.2 TDCi 109hp five speeder used on the FWD model. Early next year sees the launch of a double-cab FWD MWB low-roof version, which provides 14% more load space than the current SWB, and comes with three power ratings from its 2.2TDCi - 84, 114 and 138hp.

Furthermore,  all powertrains will have a diesel particulate filter fitted as standard, which is claimed to reduce particulates by up to 95%, while a shift indicator light mounted in the instrument cluster informs the driver when best to change to a higher gear for improved fuel economy, reduced CO2 emissions and engine wear will also be fitted. Set to join the range in the middle of next year is LWB chassis-cab in both 350 and 460 configurations.

Available in both single and double-cab, the latter can also be specced with a blank rear window and removed seat to provide a secure load area. The AWD version is powered by a 2.4-litre 138hp TDCi engine with six-speed manual 'box and is available in short, medium or long wheel-base. Normally operating in RWD, the fully mechanical system transfers power to the front wheels via an internal clutch arrangement when rear wheel slippage is detected.

Box: Vauxhall has recorded an 8% increase in light CV sales despite an overall 20% fall in the  market. The results, based on like-for-like sales figures with September 2007, have also seen the company achieve its largest retail share ever - 16.27% of the total van market. Richard Collier, Vauxhall's national CV sales manager, says: "Our performance in the retail sector shows that our products appeal to customers who want great quality and value and quality."
