Carillion Fleet heads down the electric avenue

17 October 2008

Carillion Fleet Management has supplied its first electric vehicle on contract hire. Office2Office will operate the 100% electrically powered, Congestion Charge-exempt Smith Edison van from its Beckton, London depot to deliver stationery supplies around the capital.

The van – limited to a maximum speed of 50mph, and with  an 80-mile range on a single charge – is also zero-rated for road tax. Smith estimates daily running costs of around 3p/mile.

Office2Office recently took delivery of 18 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ECO-Start vans – whose ignition automatically cuts out when not moving in traffic – as part of its strategy to reduce emissions, fuel use and noise. Mike Weston, Office2Office operations director, says: "The Smith Edison is a very cost-effective way of achieving CO2 reductions."
