The economic slowdown is causing employers to adopt a more cautious approach to driver recruitment in the run-up to Christmas, according to one recruitment agency.
Manpower's survey of more than 2,100 UK employers to establish their hiring plans for the past three months of the year found that while 6% of employers in the transport sector expect to recruit more staff, 3% will make cuts.
Simon Edwards, head of driving at Manpower, says: "We believe the results reflect the general lack of confidence, as many companies are taking a wait and see approach to their recruitment plans.
"Despite overall hiring intentions being down on the same period last year, our clients are still planning for a busy quarter, although at a more conservative rate."
Manpower says companies in the East, South East, Wales and the North-East are the least optimistic about prospects for hiring more drivers.
