Thumbs up for MegaSpace

28 October 2008

Family-run house and gardenware manufacturer Thumbs Up has taken eight high-specification Actros 1848 MegaSpace tractor units on contract hire from Bolton-based Mercedes-Benz dealer Ciceley Commercials. The trucks are equipped with 12-speed PowerShift automated transmission coupled to 480hp Euro 5 V8 engines.

The vehicles - part of an 18-strong, Bury, Lancs-based fleet - will deliver to supermarkets, high street shops and RDCs throughout the UK and Ireland. Because of the nature of the  products they carry, gross weights are low. The new Actros 4x2 tractors are plated at just 34 tonnes GVW but often 'cube out' at less than 23 tonnes.

Thumbs Up director Darren McGuinness says: "The Mercedes PowerShift transmission is right up there with the best two-pedal systems, and I also like the new safety features such as the extra blind spot mirror."
