Scania offers blindspot mirror retrofit advice

30 October 2008

Scania has launched a nationwide programme to assist LGV operators in complying with the new EU 'blindspot' mirror regulations, which come into force on 31 March 2009.

The programme includes a free mirror compliance check tool and free mirror compliance/field-of-vision checks at local Scania dealers, plus price reductions of up to 37% on compliant wide-angle and close-proximity mirror glass until the end of November 2008.

According to James Armstrong, aftersales director  for Scania (Great Britain): "This tool, which can also be obtained free of charge from operators' local Scania dealer, will determine whether any wide-angle or close-proximity mirrors fitted to Scania vehicles comply with the new regulations – although it must be stressed that fitting compliant mirrors alone is not sufficient because they must also be correctly adjusted to give the required field of vision."

Armstrong adds: "We are offering a complete supply-and-fit service for all affected vehicles, including a field-of-vision check and assistance with the self-certification forms Vosa has proposed. All operators who believe they have vehicles that fall under the scope of the new legislation should contact their local Scania dealer as soon as possible to arrange a consultation."

Additionally, Scania dealers can provide a complete fitting service for all required parts with prices starting from just £35 (ex-VAT).

What are the EU blindspot regs?

The  new blindspot rules were described in full detail in Commercial Motor 24 July 2008 – for back copies call 01371 851800 – and require all commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes GVW registered between 1 January 2000 and 26 January 2007 to be equipped with compliant Class IV close-proximity and Class V wide-angle mirrors.

The move is aimed to reduce the 400 injuries which occur across Europe every year due to blind-spot related incidents.
