The Freight Transport Association (FTA) and the Road Haulage Association (RHA) have labelled the ban on trucks in parts of the Cotswolds as pointless. Gloucestershire County Council has given the trial ban that will prevent trucks above 7.5-tonne travelling in the Cotswold area of outstanding natural beauty the
go-ahead.
Stephen Kelly, head of policy for the Midlands, Wales and south west at the FTA, says: "The stats I have seen say that the ban with reduce the number of trucks in the area by 30 a day, but that will still leave 45-50 making deliveries."
Simon Higgins, area manager for south Wales, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire at the RHA, adds that because residents will think trucks are banned from the area, it could cause a lot of bad feeling towards those that are legitimately working in the region.
