Leicester logistics firm Widdowson Group has added five Iveco Stralis tractor units to its previously 100% Scania fleet. Technical director Harry Hawksworth says: "With the prices of marques rising we had to consider other options. We looked at the flagship tractors from Daf, Mercedes-Benz and Iveco, and opted for a Stralis demonstrator."
During a four-week trial, the Stralis averaged 9mpg, comparing "favourably" with the running costs of the company's existing marque.
"The Stralis demonstrator came in for a lot of praise from our drivers, it scored top marks for a comfortable working and living space. This is important as they spend at least two nights away a week. One of them even said the cab was big enough to dance in."
The Stralis tractors will be used on nationwide general haulage, covering about 85,000 miles a year and transporting anything from Caterpillar plant on stepframe trailers to curtainsiders loaded with foodstuffs.
"Before these new vehicles going on the road, Iveco sent one of its training managers to educate our training staff about the vehicle, and in particular the Cursor engine and EuroTronic [automated] gearbox. This ensures we can help our drivers extract the maximum performance and economy," adds Hawksworth.
Each of the 6x2 Stralis tractors has been adapted by Iveco dealer Chatfields to mount susie connections high on the rear of the cab, a method pioneered by Widdowson to ensure ease of coupling to its entire trailer fleet.
The units are fitted with Masternaut telematics systems and have 10.3-litre Cursor engines, pushing out 450hp. They are also equipped with Active Super Space cabs.
