West Sussex to trial freight consolidation centre

18 November 2008

West Sussex County Council has given the thumbs up to a pilot consolidation centre to cut maintenance costs caused by lorries driving into urban areas.

As part of West Sussex County Council's 10-year transport plan, a consolidation centre will be trialled allowing HGVs to drop off deliveries outside the chosen town centre, to be picked up by smaller vans which can take them into congested areas and cause fewer emissions.

A  council spokesman says it is taking inspiration from the Bristol consolidation centre, and hopes the scheme will reduce pollution and damage to kerbs and pavements.

Referring to the Bristol scheme, the spokesman adds: "During the 18 months of this trial, not one item has been lost or damaged, and all the goods have been delivered on time. That is exemplary."

Although no specific area or date has been confirmed for the pilot, it will be in place before 2016 in line with the transport plan.
