DHL wins Olympics Logistics Centre bid

19 November 2008

DHL has made it over the final hurdle and been selected to run the East London 2012 Olympics Logistics Centre. The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) initially invited seven companies to submit proposals, whittling it down to three shortlisted finalists - DHL, EWS Railway, and Port of Tilbury - in the summer (MT 24 July).

The primary function of the Barking Logistics Centre will be to manage deliveries for the Olympic Park offsite, allowing the ODA to stagger deliveries to reduce congestion. Bruce  Edwards, CEO, DHL Exel Supply Chain, says: "This is a key win for the DHL team.

"Drawing upon our expertise within the construction sector and our experience of delivering sophisticated supply chains, we are confident that we can help the ODA meet its challenging time and cost constraints."

The centre will be up and running within a couple of weeks and the contract will run until June 2011. DHL will use road, rail and river transport to service the site.
