TNT to cut 300 jobs

20 November 2008

Parcel specialist TNT Express is to cut around 300 jobs from its UK and Irish network and head office citing "one of the sharpest downturns in decades" in the express delivery sector.

Although TNT declines to put a figure on the current fall in delivery volumes it’s clear that the whole express delivery sector is under pressure as the economic situation worsens.

A spokesman  adds: "There is obviously a downturn and it is not going to pick up in 2009. So as we go forward into next year we will be trying to maintain the trading position that we had in 2008."

TNT says that redundancies, which are subject to a 30-day consultation process, will be spread across both its network of 55 depots and its head office, plus its added value businesses and will in most cases be limited to single figures.

The job losses do not affect drivers in either line-haul or collection and delivery roles, however the company is cutting the use of sub-contractors on the line-haul operation in order to save costs.

The spokesman adds: "There are going to be tough times ahead and we need to be fit and healthy in order to emerge strongly on the other side.

"We are trying to minimise the impact of job losses, this is not something that we are doing lightly."

Volvo Trucks has started a 90-day consultation process over a potential 136 redundancies across its wholly-owned dealer network and its head office.
