Fuel card agency asks government to cut fuel tax

21 November 2008

Fuel card agency The Fuelcard People is continuing the call for cheaper fuel tax by writing to the government and insisting the problem must not be overshadowed by failing banks.

On 20 November Steve Clarke, general manager of The Fuelcard People, wrote to five government ministers asking them to loosen the 'fuel tax noose' hanging over the industry's neck.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, transport secretary Geoff Hoon, transport  minister Andrew Adonis and transport under secretaries Paul Clark and Jim Fitzpatrick were sent the letters to reinforce just how vital the road transport sector is.

Clarke argues: "The bacon and eggs they tucked into this morning were brought to them by road. When they dress for another hard day in the office, everything they put on will have had to travel by truck at some point."

A picture of a fuel line knotted into a noose was included with the letter to emphasise that more than half of the pump price for fuel represents taxation.

A spokesman for the firm says it hopes for but is not expecting a government response because all people want to talk about is the current bank crisis.
