Business-to-business parcel specialist TNT Express is planning to cut up to 300 jobs from its UK and Irish network and head office citing "one of the sharpest downturns in decades" in the express sector. A spokesman adds: "If it's not there to move, then we can't move it. TNT is a robust business, but we are not immune to the vagaries of the economic downturn.
"It's a harsh world at the moment and we have to make sure that we are more than economically viable and that we maintain our market-leading position in the UK."
TNT says the redundancies, which are subject to a 30-day consultation process, will be spread across both its network of 55 depots and its head office in Atherstone, Warwickshire, plus its added-value businesses, and will in most cases be limited to single figures. The job losses do not affect drivers in either line-haul or collection-and-delivery roles, however, the company is reducing the use of subcontractors on line-haul.
