M-B offers ECO-Start Sprinter trials

26 November 2008

Mercedes-Benz has placed 50 ECO-Start Sprinters with its CV dealers in the UK for trial with potential customers. The technology, which turns the engine off when the vehicle is stationary, for example in traffic, is claimed to save up to 15% in fuel when used on urban work.

David Hickson, marketing manager for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, says: "As well as fuel consumption, there's also the environmental issue to consider when running a van.ECO-Start offers potentially significant savings  on both fronts. Dealer reaction has been very positive as the need to have greener vehicles to offer customers is more relevant than ever."

However, he stresses that the technology isn't for everyone: "Vans that operate out of town and away from congestion will not feel the benefits of the system as much as those in an urban role."

Mercedes-Benz has sold 150 ECO-Start Sprinters so far and it expects it to make up 20% to 30% of total Sprinter sales in 2009. It costs an additional £545, unless you are also speccing the van with air-con, in which case it's only £250.
