FedEx has taken delivery of its first Modec electric van, one of 10 that it will be operating in central London. The move is part of the parcel delivery company's strategy to reduce its fleet's CO2 emissions by 20% for 2020, with the vans operating out of two depots – Beckton and Leyton.
The vehicles, which have a range of 70 miles, feature bespoke racking and dead-locking systems, and will all be in operation by May 2009 for up to
10 years.
Instead of signing the standard battery rental agreement that Modec offers as part of its vehicle package, FedEx has purchased the vehicles outright.
Modec will also be training FedEx's engineering team so the vehicles can be maintained in-house.
Adam Psarianos, FedEx vice-president of operations, says: "The introduction of these 10 vehicles to our UK fleet is a smart, strategic investment for FedEx and supports our ongoing efforts to foster the commercial development of viable new technologies that improve the environmental performance of the transport industry."
