Manchester says no to congestion charge

Friday 12 December 2008 12:00

Manchester has rejected a congestion charge, which favoured public transport investments, after saying no to the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) Referendum.

The results of the Manchester TIF Referendum were released today (12 December).

A majority of voters in all of the region's 10 boroughs voted against the £2.8bn funding package.

The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) hoped the TIF would improve public transport, which would have seen a congestion charge zone set up.

AGMA said if the scheme had been given the go-ahead, HGVs would be exempt from payment for the first year while a study into its impact on the freight industry is carried out.
