UK operators want the Traffic Commissioners to target foreign hauliers coming into the country, but broadly support the way the TCs regulate the industry. According to the latest CM/Michelin business monitor, 72% of haulage operators believe foreign operators conducting domestic haulage in the UK should hold a UK O-licence.
One respondent said TCs should "target the foreign hauliers coming into the country". At the same time, 97% of those surveyed believed that a foreign operator with a UK operating centre should have its trucks maintained in the UK. Giving the opposite viewpoint, one respondent said: "It does not matter where trucks are maintained as long as they meet the requirements."
However hauliers are generally happy with the way the industry is regulated: 74% insisted that the entry qualifications to become a haulier were 'about right', while the same proportion believed the TCs' regulatory approach was also 'about right'. One fifth (20%) of respondents, however, considered the TCs to be too tough in their decisions.
