UK firms should take Royal Mail stake, says APC

Friday 19 December 2008 16:31

Parcel delivery network APC Overnight says the Government should look to British companies when considering a new business partner for Royal Mail.

Jon Barber, APC Overnight marketing director, says his company - or another UK firm such as Parcelnet, Home Delivery Network or City Link - could take the stake of up to 33% of Royal Mail that is on offer rather than the early front-runner, Dutch-owned TNT Post.

In a House of Lords statement, business secretary Lord Mandelson said Royal Mail needed to modernise its business by forging a "strategic minority partnership with a postal operator with a proven record in transforming its business".

Barber adds: "APC Overnight can be part of a UK partnership that could resolve the Royal Mail issue.

"With the downturn in the economy, the Government should be looking to protect British jobs and UK parcels networks not only have the infrastructure and capacity but are also well ahead in the technology stakes.

"We believe that as a modern UK business with nationwide reach and comprehensive local knowledge, we are well placed to work with Royal Mail for the last mile of deliveries."
