Wincanton confirms 188 redundancies

22 December 2008

Wincanton has confirmed that 188 employees will be made redundant after Christmas owing to the collapse of retail giant Woolworths.

With effect from Monday 29 December, 188 Wincanton staff will be made redundant, of which 122 are drivers.

With 807 Woolworths stores set to shut within two weeks, Wincanton says: "Following discussions with the administrators, Deloitte Touche, Wincanton can confirm that it has been advised that  its logistics support service to Woolworths is no longer required post-Christmas."

Some 126 tractors and 260 trailers, operating mainly from locations at Castleton and Swindon, were used on the contract.

Wincanton says it is currently involved in a major redeployment process to help find employment elsewhere in the company for affected staff.

The logistics firm adds that it is disappointed to end the contract, which dates back to 1994.
