Clean Air Power (CAP) is trialling its dual-fuel technology on Volvo engines.
John Pettitt, CAP chief executive, is aiming for 80% gas substitution on the D13 engine - meaning an 80% drop in diesel volume consumption. On a 100,000 miles-a-year tractor, this equates to a £10,000 to £15,000 saving, as natural gas is cheaper than diesel.
The technology will command a premium of £20,000-plus, however pay-back can be achieved within 18 months to two years.
Subject to successful trials, dual-fuel D13s may be available for order from the Swedish manufacturer by late 2009/early 2010.
CAP is also working on a retrofit alternative using its Genesis product.
