'Operation Stammtisch' extended across the UK

Wednesday 28 January 2009 11:29

A pilot scheme to improve communication between the Metropolitan Police and lorry drivers has been extended indefinitely and other police forces are looking to follow suit.

Based on a German concept -Operation Stammtisch -which translated means "regular get together", involves police meeting once a month with truck drivers in motorway service stations to discuss any issues and concerns they have.

Following the pilot's success, West Midlands police, Somerset police and Wiltshire police are in the process of setting up similar programmes and at least four other police forces are considering introducing the scheme.

Sergeant Richard Golding, part of the Metropolitan Police's Commercial Vehicle Education Unit, says the pilot has received a lot of support from drivers and operators and should help the industry stay on the right side of the law. "By giving the drivers the information they need to stay legal, they can take that information back to their employers."

For details of the times and places where Stammtisch will be found go to the Stammtisch website.
