Kirklees Council powers electric van from waste

05 February 2009

Kirklees Council is running an electric light CV powered off energy regained from its waste station. The van, which will use electricity generated from the 'Energy from Waste' plant in Huddersfield, is supplied by Smith Electric Vehicles and is based on a 3.5-tonne Ford Transit chassis-cab, complete with caged tipper body.

Range for the van is 100 miles, while top speed is 50mph.

Cllr David Sheard, Kirklees Council cabinet member, says: "The new electric vehicle has zero emissions, low fuel costs, low maintenance costs and benefits from zero-fee road fund licence.

The council has funded the purchase of the electric vehicle through its Council Wide Initiative Transport Allocation, which was developed to encourage the use of cleaner fuels.
