Manufacturers of anti-siphoning devices are reaping the rewards of operators looking to prevent fuel theft during a recession, with TruckProtect and Tiss Security Systems both doubling their turnover in 2008. On the back of a rise in turnover of approximately £2m last year, Newport, South Wales-based TruckProtect has invested £200,000 in an expansion programme.

Chief executive officer  Russell Fowler says UK sales have been strong as operators worry about losing diesel in tight times. "Our aim is to ensure we stay solid throughout the year, continuing on our current course, and emerge from the economic crisis in robust condition to further expand our horizons," he adds.

Meanwhile Matthew Rose, marketing director at Blackpool-based Tiss, estimates turnover will increase by at least 50% in 2009. He attributes the rise to turbulent fuel prices causing hauliers to protect their investments in commodities. Rose says TankSafe's £185 'Impregnable' anti-siphon device accounted for 95% of the firm's turnover and 90% of its sales in 2008.
