Apprentice HGV mechanics in London are set to team up with Sir Alan Sugar to discuss how to tackle a nationwide shortage of young people in the sector.
As part of National Apprenticeship Week (23-27 February), three student CV mechanics from Enfield-based North London Garage Group (NLGGTA) will meet with Sugar and schools secretary Ed Balls on 26 February.
At the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) round table event, the apprentices will put the case that there are not enough workplaces to accommodate lorry mechanics during the recession.
A spokesman for the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), which funds NLGGTA, says: "In the current economic circumstances, it is more important than ever to ensure that employees have the skills they need to help deliver success which is why businesses should continue to train. Training will help them through the current storm while also readying them for when the storm passes."
The shortage of HGV mechanics comes after NLGGTA's managing director Trevor Platups warned Commercial Motor in November that firms employing mechanics would have to start watching their overheads.
