Keystone fits fleet with Fresnel lenses

05 March 2009

With less than a month to go before the EU directive on close-proximity and wide-angle mirrors comes into force, Keystone Distribution UK has adopted the TruckView Fresnel lens, manufactured by Alenia Optic, throughout its fleet as an additional driver aid to combat the  'blind-spot' problem.

The lenses, which attach to the nearside door window glass, have been fitted to more than 140 artics and rigid vehicles.

Keystone supplies all McDonalds restaurants in the UK, and national transport manager Tony Winterbottom says: "Keystone is fully committed to health and safety and providing our drivers with every opportunity to deliver a world-class service. We decided the TruckView lens is aligned to this, offering an extremely effective and economical LGV visual safety enhancement for our fleet."

Although Fresnel lenses do not meet the EU directive they provide useful additional vision on the nearside, particularly around the vulnerable front corner of a truck where pedestrians and cyclists can be lost to the driver.

VOSA has also been issuing foreign drivers entering the UK with free Fresnel lenses (also made by Alenia Optic) to help overcome the front offside corner blind spot on left-hand-drive trucks using British roads.
