New Volvo engine and gearbox range saves fuel

Tuesday 10 March 2009 05:18

Volvo has introduced a new range of Euro-5 engines and gearboxes that can cut fuel consumption by up to 3% and NOx emissions by 40%.

Having recently launched the world's most powerful truck, the 700hp Volvo FH16, the Swedish truck-maker's engineers have now turned their attention to its 11- and 13-litre engines - and there's also a new version of Volvo's seven-litre engine.

Further optimisation of the combustion process and new software developments for the I-Shift autobox have seen the fuel consumption of the 13-litre engine reduced by up to 3%, while for the recently-introduced 11-litre engine the savings are around 1-2%.

According to Volvo: "Seen over a 20-year perspective, fuel consumption and climate-impacting carbon dioxide emissions from a typical Volvo truck have been cut by 20%."

At the same time, the maximum power output from the 13-litre engine used in the FH has risen from 520hp to 540hp while torque now peaks at 2,600Nm - an increase of 100Nm over the previous version. The D11 diesel is available up to 450hp and with torque of up 2,150Nm while the D7 is available up to 340hp and with 1,300Nm (on the FE) or 290hp/1,070Nm (on the FL).

These new engines not only meet the new Euro-5 emission regs that come into force in October 2009 but also produce 40% less NOx than the previous Euro-4 versions.

The D13 engine is also available in an Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle (EEV) version, with an EEV D11 engine scheduled to follow shortly.
