Downton wins major contract with Bottlegreen

31 March 2009

The Bottlegreen Drinks Company has awarded its outsourced warehousing and UK distribution to Downton, an independent transport and logistics company.

The decision to choose another Gloucestershire-based business was partly for environmental reasons, says Simon Speers, managing director of Bottlegreen.

"Downton is still very much family run, and we believe their values  are in line with the way Bottlegreen conducts its business," he says. "As a company, we are always trying to find new ways to improve our green credentials and using a local distribution firm will enable us to save over 30,000 food miles a year."

Bottlegreen is a 20-year old premium soft drinks producer which supplies Waitrose, Sainsbury's, the Co-op, Morrisons, Tesco and Budgens.

Annual volumes from the production facility at South Woodchester in the Cotswolds are growing year on year, and are forecast to reach 12.5 million bottles in 2009. Downton will collect product daily, warehouse at its Moreton Valence distribution centre, and then trunk direct to each supermarket's national distribution hub.

Richard Downton, finance director of Downton, says: "It's good to be working with such a successful company, and helping to ensure its continued growth."

In February, the operator opened  a £10m distribution centre as part of its long-term strategy.
