Under new EU proposals, tyre manufacturers will have to label their products with information on fuel efficiency, safety and noise performance. The European Parliament's Industry Committee backed the recommendation last week.
A report by MEP Ivo Belet says suppliers must show fuel efficiency, wet grip and external rolling noise classes in technical literature for C1, C2 and C3 tyres fitted to cars and light and heavy commercial vehicles.
Distributors must also include this information in their literature and the label will have to be attached as a sticker to C1 and C2 tyres.
The Industry Committee wants the European Commission to create by 2010 an EU tyre labelling website to explain each component of the label. Suppliers will be required to show a fuel savings calculator on their websites so that buyers can assess the potential savings of different tyres.
