MAN reveals Euro-5 engine details

16 April 2009

MAN has released details of its Euro-5 engine range, with an acknowledgement that exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) isn't the sole solution to the forthcoming emission regulations on all its heavy truck power ratings. However, it insists that EGR "will be the dominant technology" for the new regs, which come into effect in October.

EGR is retained on all Euro-5 and EEV DO8 four- and six-cylinder engines fitted in its TGL and TGM middleweight chassis. The DO8 will be offered from 150-340hp,  with fuelling by common-rail. MAN says the price increase from a Euro-4 DO8 four-pot to a Euro-5 version will be £1,275, while the D08 six-pot Euro-5 price premium will be £2,261.

Higher up the weight range MAN's torquey D20 10.5-litre engine (used in the TGS) continues with EGR at 360hp and 400hp, while the larger 13-litre D26 in-line six (fitted in the TGX) is offered at 440hp with EGR, then with selective catalytic reduction (SCR)/AdBlue at 480hp, and at a new 540hp rating. The top-of-the-range 680hp 16-litre V8 continues as before with SCR for Euro-5. The price premium for a Euro-5 D20/D26 engine will be £4,633.

The advent of Euro-5 means that the previously most powerful 440hp D20 engine, bought for its impressive fuel economy and lightness, has now been discontinued - the most powerful 10-litre engine is now at 400hp.

The latest 540hp D26 rating, with 2,500Nm of torque, will be offered in a new TGX 26.540 6x2 tractor with the largest XXL cab and standard  Tipmatic auto box. MAN says the 26.5340 is aimed at long-haul operators who want high horsepower, but who are probably reluctant to go for a V8.

MAN has also developed two additional rear-steer 6x2 and 8x2 models for bulk/tanker work.
