Driver caught smuggling drugs jailed for 10 years

20 April 2009

A lorry driver has been handed a 10-year prison sentence for trying to smuggle more than £4m worth of cannabis through Portsmouth Port. On 24 April 2007, more than 1.5 tonnes of cannabis was found hidden in pallets of laminate flooring; HGV driver Steven Grundy has now been jailed for 10 years.

Grundy, of Meadow Drive, Devizes, Wiltshire, said he had no idea the drugs were in the back of his lorry upon his arrival back from Barcelona.

However, Portsmouth Crown Court heard that in  March 1998, he had admitted at Manchester Crown Court to importing 47kg of cannabis resin into the UK.

"This was a concerted attempt to smuggle a significant quantity of cannabis into the UK. The 10-year sentence handed down will act as a deterrent to those contemplating this form of criminality," says HM Revenue and Customs senior criminal investigator Tim Fleming.
