Volvo's Trucks and Powertrain businesses have made significant job cuts, blaming the decision on the sharp decline in demand for heavy vehicles worldwide.
The Trucks business has terminated 655 contracts at the company's facilities in Gothenburg and Umea, while the Powertrain operation has cut another 655 jobs at facilities in Skövde and Köpling.
Stefan Johnsson, Volvo's senior vice-president, says: "We are conducting ongoing discussions with the unions regarding shortening of the working week and view being able to implement parts of these notices with such a solution as positive."
