Haringey Council has begun a consultation on a 7.5-tonne weight restriction and 20mph speed limit for areas around the A406 North Circular Road, a move that North London hauliers fear could prove costly.

"The primary purpose of the consultation on traffic-calming measures for the Palace Gates and Alexandra Palace area is to end daily rat-running by commuters looking to avoid congestion on the North Circular," a Haringey spokeswoman  says.

Roads affected would include Dukes Avenue, Albert Road and Crescent Road.

Steve Pidgeon, fleet maintenance manager at Cricklewood-based PB  Donoghue Group, comments: "I think the speed limit is a good idea if it leads to fewer accidents and also makes cars slower."

Construction group Wood Green Timber Company is also willing to accept a speed ban but director Andy Ranger admits: "As a group operating in London it seems every day there is another cost, so this 7.5-tonne HGV ban would cause us to take longer routes and add another price to our business."
