Wincanton is cutting up to 283 jobs - including 161 drivers - at its home delivery division following a strategic review. The company says it will close its shared-user home delivery operations and concentrate its activities on its dedicated home delivery customer contracts.

Job losses will be made across eight of its sites in the UK including Mossend, Lanarkshire; Thetford, Norfolk; Rugby, Warwickshire; Widnes, Cheshire; Avonmouth,  Avon; Greenford, London; Spennymoor, Co Durham and Ford, West Sussex.

Wincanton has now begun a 90-day consultation period with affected employees and their unions. The company says there may be opportunities to redeploy people elsewhere within the Wincanton home delivery network, as well as its wider network.

A spokesman for the company says: "Within Wincanton's shared-user network, customers' volumes have significantly reduced, and the critical mass no longer exists to provide the national coverage, frequency and minimum service levels required to operate a shared home delivery service."
