Wincanton wins lucrative contract extensions

06 May 2009

Wincanton has secured two lucrative contract extensions in the DIY and construction markets, worth a total of £55m.

The transport firm has won a three-year, £33m deal to manage product storage and distribution at the 600,000ft2 Focus DIY National Distribution Centre (NDC) in Tamworth, which serves the retailer's 181 stores.

Grahame Richardson, business unit director at Wincanton,  says: "We have managed the Tamworth distribution centre for Focus for 15 years now, and over this time we have worked with the retailer to help develop its business.

"This has meant that we have embraced the changing retail model, chiefly the growth of online shopping, and offered Focus a flexible supply chain that can add value and adapt to its business needs."

Wincanton has also been awarded a £20m five-year contract with building materials specialist Marley Eternit to transport roofing products from sites in Staffordshire, Mid Glamorgan and Kent.

Last July, Wincanton secured the contract to transport materials from Marley Eternit's Glasgow and Reading bases.

Ken Clark, head of customer services and distribution at Marley Eternit, says: "Entering into this long-term  relationship with Wincanton means we can achieve our objective to reduce the number of vehicles we have on the road and consolidate deliveries to minimise empty running."
