CV registration figures continue downward turn

Friday 08 May 2009 12:08

Commercial vehicle (CV) registrations continued to plummet in April, with a fall of 44.8% compared to the same period last year, while the year-to-date dropped by 27.7%, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector was the worst affected, down 45.6%, with truck sales not far behind, decreasing by 41.0%.

In the van sector, LDV was, unsurprisingly, the worst hit with a reduction of 82.8% for April, followed by Iveco with 61.1% and Fiat at 58.4.

Also hit hard were Renault and Mercedes-Benz with 56.7% and 56.5% declines respectively.

MAN was the most significantly hit in the truck category with a drop of 53.7% (and 55.3% for the year), followed by Volvo with 51.5% and Scania with 47.9%.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, says: "While we see the government's policy bringing some relief, confidence remains subdued. We see little evidence to indicate a quick recovery, and we expect a record low for year-end van and truck registrations."
