Graeme McFaull, chief executive of Wincanton, has been sworn in as president of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) at an inaugural lunch in London today (Friday 8 May). McFaull will hold the presidency until May 2010 and succeedsRichard Brown, chief executive of Eurostar UK, who has held the presidency for the past 12 months.
McFaull told an audience packed with some of the biggest names in the logistics industry that it was "vital" the profile of CILT was raised, and stressed the need to "garner greater support from the industry".
He added: "I think there is an inconsistent approach to professional development in many companies, which needs to change, and involvement within the institute, which has worked hard in recent years to become a more focused and relevant body for its members, can be a catalyst for change."
McFaull saidthat while the institute had "around 20,000 individual members across the UK", it could only count on a handful of businesses as corporate members.
"WhileI can see the untapped potential for improving this ratio," he adds. "I am nonetheless surprised that the institute does not have the recognition it deserves by the organisations that represent its key target audience."
