Up to 200 drums of hazardous chemicals have been found in an abandoned Tesco trailer in Shropshire. On 12 May specialist contractors were called in to make safe the area around a lay-by on the A53 near Hodnet following the discovery of unknown chemicals in the trailer.
The trailer, which may have been parked in the lay-by for up to two weeks, had Tesco livery; however it was decommissioned and no longer belonged to the supermarket giant. The Environment Agency (EA) is investigating who the last registered owners were.
Currently any firm that does not dispose of chemicals properly to prevent damage to residents or the environment faces prosecution. Anyone with any information on the trailer or the tractor unit used to transport the trailer is asked to contact the EA on 0800 807 060.
