April CV production down 65% on last year

26 May 2009

UK commercial vehicle production continued on a downward spiral in April, according to the SMMT's latest figures. Production for the month was down 65% on April 2008, with just 7,655 vehicles rolling out of UK factories.

The year-to-date figure paints a bleak picture of the overall market conditions with volumes down by nearly 64% - only 29,950 CVs have been manufactured so far in 2009. Nearly all manufacturers have cut production,  workforces and operating hours as a result of the recession.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, says: "Despite the current difficulties, the UK must prepare for the return of global growth - and government support for the industry is an essential part of the process.

"With the scrappage incentive scheme fully operational, industry is optimistic about the positive impact this will have on the market and on UK production facilities."
