Veolia completes trial of biomethane Iveco Daily

28 May 2009

An Iveco Daily running on compressed biomethane (CBM) derived from landfill has completed a six-month trial with waste management company Veolia Environmental Services, operating on behalf of Camden Council.

The 65C14G CBM operated alongside an existing compressed natural gas (CNG) Daily 65C11G and was found to use 6% less fuel than the latter as well  as cut 'well to wheel' CO2 emissions per kilometre by 56%, a figure which also takes into consideration fuel production and distribution.

The Daily CBM is also already Euro-6-compliant and produces 90% less particulate matter, 60% less NOx and 50% less sulphur dioxide than a diesel equivalent. It only requires one fuelling a day compared with two for the CNG, and according to drivers the claimed improved fuel quality offers a more responsive vehicle.

Keith Riley, technical services managing director at Veolia, says: "From this trial we can see there is an opportunity for further development of this technology in some of our operations and we are now considering developing a system to harness the fuel from our own network of landfill sites."

More than 4,000 Iveco CNGs and CBMs already operate in Europe.
