Two Britons have been arrested in France after a record amount of cocaine was found in their truck, hidden under bags of soil. The truck was headed for London.

Yesterday (Thursday 28 May), the two men - both in their 50s - were caught allegedly trying to smuggle 684kg of pure cocaine with a street value of £30m into the UK from Spain.

Officers became suspicious after seeing the HGV travelling erratically on the A9 Mediterranean coast motorway near Montpellier, Southern France;  on inspection, a scanner revealed abnormal loads.

The drugs were found in plastic bags packed around cash registers and under piles of peat. A regional customs spokesman says: "It's the biggest haul of cocaine ever seized in mainland France."

The two suspects have been taken into custody and face charges of drug trafficking.
