Wincanton shuts two sites; 818 jobs lost

02 June 2009

Wincanton has closed the two chilled depots left without clients following the sale of its temperature-controlled consolidation business to Culina Logistics last year. The company had previously said it hoped to find alternative uses for the depots  in Brockworth, Gloucestershire and Trafford Park in Manchester, but has been unable to do so.

In all, 368 jobs have been lost at Brockworth, with 82 workers relocating within the group; 450 jobs have gone at Trafford Park.

Eddie Gaudie, north-west regional organiser for the GMB union, says that the workers at the Trafford Park site were able to gain enhanced redundancy terms after threatening industrial action. He adds: "Although they were resigned to the closure because of the lack of investment in the site, it still didn't sit well with them." No-one from Wincanton was available to comment.
