Operation Stammtisch attracts eight new forces

Monday 08 June 2009 15:06

Operation Stammtisch, a regular forum for police and truck drivers, has spread across the UK, attracting eight new forces since January.

Based on a German concept, the word stammtisch translates loosely as 'regular get together'. In each constabulary, three officers meet with truckers on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss any concerns or issues on the roads.

The Metropolitan Police and the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) put the scheme to the test in 2008. The following forces have now joined: Avon and Somerset, Derbyshire, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Surrey.

Steve Rounds, CV lead at CMPG, says Cheshire Police, Lancashire Police, Merseyside Police and South Yorkshire Police are also expected to join by the end of the year.
