Supermarket Asda has admitted that its driver training system was "failing to achieve tangible output" prior to an overhaul of the system last year.
The comment came from Simon Pearson, head of central logistics at the Leeds-based retailer, at today's Institute of Grocery Distribution (IDG) 'Sustainable Distribution 2009' conference.
The realisation that training was not delivering came after a thorough analysis of the distribution operation's sustainable performance. Pearson added: "We realised that while we were passionate about fuel economy, we were not great on training our drivers.
"When we got under the skin of it, we found that although it wasn't as bad as a tick box, it was failing to achieve a tangible output."
In response, the company launched a new, wide-ranging driver training programme; so far, around 40% of its 3,000 drivers have been through it.
